Reggio Emilia Childcare Centres | Targeting the 5 Developmental Learning Outcomes with Reggio 5

At Reggio Emilia early learning centres, we believe in nurturing every aspect of a child’s growth, addressing not just their academic needs but also their social, emotional, and physical development. Through our Reggio 5 program, we create meaningful and engaging experiences that also work to promote the five key developmental learning outcomes.

In this blog, we take a closer look at how the Reggio 5 targets each of these outcomes along with some exciting activities that bring them to life. Let’s dive in!

What are the Main Developmental Learning Outcomes?

There are five key areas of early childhood development. These are:

  1. Social and emotional development: Social and emotional skills are all about helping children connect with others and form meaningful relationships. They also play a key role in understanding and managing emotions, as well as regulating thoughts and behaviours.
  2. Language and communication: These skills determine how children interact with others, including verbal communication, facial expressions, and body language. Language and communication help children express themselves and build connections with others.
  3. Cognitive development: Cognitive skills involve how children think, reason, and solve problems. This includes everything from memory to numeracy concepts, decision-making, and processing information.
  4. Sensory development: Sensory exploration is all about children using their five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—to explore and engage children with the world around them. It helps them to make sense of their environment and deepens the meaning of their experiences.
  5. Fine motor skills: These skills relate to the small muscles in a child’s body, such as in their fingers and hands. Fine motor skills are key for tasks like grasping objects and drawing, allowing children to interact more effectively with their surroundings.

At Reggio Emilia, our curriculum is enhanced by extra-curricular activities we refer to as the Reggio 5. These activities are thoughtfully crafted to create engaging learning experiences for children whilst also supporting the five key developmental learning areas mentioned above. Let’s take a closer look at how these programs come to life!

Earth to Kitchen

Our Earth to Kitchen program is all about exploring the environment and forming connections with the world around us. Earth to Kitchen teaches our children about sustainability, healthy eating, and cultural diversity. Together, we engage children in many hands-on experiences to learn about our environment and develop valuable skills that will last a lifetime.

Examples of Earth to Kitchen activities include planting seeds, preparing delicious meals, and crafting with recycled materials. These activities target the 5 key developmental learning areas in the following ways:

  • Social and emotional development: As children work on environmental projects together, they are encouraged to work as a team. This builds a sense of responsibility and empathy towards the environment and their peers.
  • Language and communication: Learning about sustainability concepts, talking about environmental issues, and following recipes spark conversations, strengthening language development and communication skills.
  • Cognitive development: Through activities such as cooking and learning how plants grow, children explore the process of cause and effect. We also encourage them to make decisions about ingredients and sustainability practices, which supports their cognitive functioning.
  • Sensory development: As children engage in outdoor activities and experience different textures, smells, and tastes in cooking, they are not just having fun! They are also able to awaken and develop their senses in wonderful ways.
  • Fine motor skills: As children participate in activities like planting seeds, sorting recyclables, and using kitchen utensils, they are able to develop their fine motor skills.

Music & Sound

Music and Sound encourages our children to express themselves in new ways. Together, we discover the joy of music, giving children the confidence to showcase their musical talents and creativity in a fun and supportive environment.

Some examples of Music and Sound activities include singing, playing instruments, and interactive sound lessons. Through Music and Sound, the 5 key developmental learning areas are supported in the following ways:

  • Social and emotional development: Group activities like singing songs and playing instruments fosters cooperation and self-expression through music. Children are reminded that even though we have our differences, music can unite us all.
  • Language and communication: Learning new songs improves language skills and communication abilities. Children also discover music as a way to express themselves and communicate with others.
  • Cognitive development: Listening to music and playing musical instruments provide children with essential cognitive skills like pattern recognition and rhythmic understanding.
  • Sensory development: By listening to music, feeling vibrations from instruments, and practicing rhythm, children develop their auditory and tactile sensory processing.
  • Fine motor skills: Playing musical instruments encourage children to use their hands and fingers to grasp and move them to a beat. This supports the development of their fine motor skills.

Fitness & Mindfulness

Fitness and Mindfulness introduces our children to various physical activities. Children learn ways to move their body, improve their sports skills, and work as a team. We also explore yoga together, which supports our children’s physical and mental wellbeing.

Examples of Fitness and Mindfulness activities include obstacle courses, soccer, and mindful breathing exercises. This is how Fitness and Mindfulness strengthens the 5 key developmental learning areas:

  • Social and emotional development: Team sports develop social and emotional skills like cooperation, communication, and sportsmanship. Through yoga, children are also taught how to recognise and manage their emotions in creative new ways.
  • Language and communication: Following instructions, communicating strategies, and expressing feelings work to support language and communication.
  • Cognitive development: Physical activity and mindfulness exercises stimulate brain function and boosts cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving skills and decision making processes. These activities also improve attention span and memory needed for healthy cognitive function.
  • Sensory development: As children interact with sporting equipment, different environments, and each other, they are able to use and develop their senses. For example, hand-eye coordination, listening to instructions, and spatial awareness.
  • Fine motor skills: Regular physical activity promotes good physical health, improves fine and gross motor skills, strengthens muscles and bones, and enhances overall fitness.

Language & Culture

Through our Language and Culture program, children develop a deep appreciation for different cultures and people of the world. Currently, our program focuses on Italian culture, which makes learning a new language a rich and meaningful experience for all children to enjoy.

Examples of Language and Culture activities include dramatic play, storytelling, and crafts. Language and Culture addresses the 5 key developmental learning areas in the following ways:

  • Social and emotional development: Conversations, storytelling, and role-play activities support social interaction and empathy. Children are also able to develop their understanding of their emotions and recognise these emotions in others around them.
  • Language and communication: By engaging in stories, reading books, and practicing language, children are able to expand their vocabulary, develop their communication skills, and improve fluency.
  • Cognitive development: Practicing language and learning about Italian culture equips children with vital knowledge and skills for healthy cognitive functioning.
  • Sensory development: Children are immersed in the rich Italian culture with traditional music, food, and practices. This encourages children to explore the world whilst supporting their sensory development with new sounds, sights, and tastes.
  • Fine motor skills: Through writing, tracing letters, and using small objects for language-based activities, children are able to practice and improve their fine motor skills.

Dance & Beats

Our uplifting Dance and Beats program invites children to express their feelings and develop their coordination. We integrate educational concepts with the joy of movement, strengthening muscles and social connections in a fun and exciting way.

Some examples of Dance and Beats activities include ballet, discos, and creative movement. Here’s how Dance and Beats focuses on the five key developmental learning areas:

  • Social and emotional development: Children learn the importance of teamwork and cooperation as they dance together and synchronise their movements. Dance and creative movement is also one of the 100 languages of children, which encourage them to express themselves and showcase their emotions.
  • Language and communication: Through dance, children learn how to listen to instructions and follow verbal directions. This enhances their receptive language skills.
  • Cognitive development: Learning new dance routines and movements support memory and the ability to follow instructions, which are crucial cognitive skills.
  • Sensory development: Synchronising movements to a musical beat supports children in developing a sense of rhythm and timing. These skills are an important component of sensory development.
  • Fine motor skills: Certain activities and dance styles involve intricate hand and finger movements, improving dexterity and fine motor skills.
